EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2026, STARTING SALARY UP TO $78,557 FOR SWORN LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH PRIOR EXPERIENCE
This position performs general law enforcement work with the responsibility of preservation and protection of life and property, the prevention and investigation of crime, and other related duties as directed or assigned within the Leon County Detention Facility. Investigative duties with LCDF involve inmates, civilians, visitors, and staff. Most duties involve conducting interviews and investigations, reviewing inmate phone calls, reviewing security videos, gathering and documenting intelligence, responding to reports of criminal activity, proactively preventing criminal activity, and thoroughly investigating and documenting efforts during complaints of or suspected criminal activity. The duties will also involve searches within LCDF to include all inmate housing areas, support areas, and staff areas. Searches will either be random, or intelligence driven. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in local, state, and federal statutes and ordinances, officer safety, firearms proficiency, knowledge of The Florida Model Jail Standards, Jail Standard Operational Procedures, and LCSO Policy and Procedure, defense and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving, team building skills, intermediate computer skills, knowledge of Securus phone system, and interviewing skills. The position exercises judgement, individual and team initiative in the performance of duties, often collaboratively working with other units at the agency.

Requirements
Eligibility Criteria:
- High School Diploma
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- In compliance with 943.13 F.S., the position requires the employee to be at least 19 years of age, be a citizen of the United States, be of good moral character, must have completed a basic training program for Law Enforcement approved by the
- CJSTC and pass the Florida certification examination.
- Must not be disqualified by any factors outlined in the application for employment.
- Must maintain a primary residence within Leon County or a county adjacent to Leon (Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson Counties in Florida, Thomas and Grady Counties in Georgia).
- Must pass standard Physical Agility Test as required.
- Must satisfactorily complete LCSO Field Training Program.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving history.
- Dual certification in Corrections or ability to become certified in the State of Florida preferred.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIREMENTS
- Mobility-Frequent standing for extended periods of time, walking for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, may be required to drive an agency vehicle and/or transport inmates; constant use of a computer; use of a firearm
- Lifting-Able to lift 50 pounds
- Visual-Constant overall binocular vision; constant color perception, constant eye-hand coordination; constant depth perception; frequent reading/close-up work; constant field of vision/peripheral
- Dexterity-Frequent repetitive motion and reaching
- Hearing/Talking-Constant requirement to hear normal speech; constant hearing on telephone and radio; ability to hear faint sounds; constant talking on telephone/radio
- Emotional/Psychological- Potential contact with hostile individuals; direct inmate contact, exposure to emergency situations; may be exposed to trauma, grief and death; frequent public contact; decision-making and concentration
- Special Requirements-Ability to behave respectably and with utmost integrity even when off duty. Shift work (days or nights) with rotating days off including working weekends, nights, holidays, and/or overtime; May be required to respond for any critical incident, manmade or natural; must be able to appropriately wear and operate a self-contained breathing apparatus
- Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions and increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous or infectious materials

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Pass Firearms and Defensive Tactics courses as required.
- Pass various driving tests as required.
- Pass all other courses/training as mandated by LCSO and/or FCJSTC.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
- Position has an increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous and infectious materials.
- Must be able to wear required uniform and equipment including a safety belt weighing 10 or more pounds.
