- Public Service Aide
Description
The Public Service Aide is responsible for conducting active patrolling of assigned area, zone, or serve and assist the general public with non-criminal calls. Incumbent must run tags and license plate numbers; respond to traffic accidents and crashes; and investigate non-police action and rescue calls. Duties also include testifying at trials, hearings, grand juries or depositions and preparing reports, affidavits, and legal documents. This position assists during times of natural disasters (i.e. hurricanes, fires) and provides support during traffic escorts that may require a modified schedule including nights and/or weekends to accommodate agency response requirements. PSA’s report directly to and work at the direction of the PSA Sergeant.
Duties
- Responds to and investigates traffic collisions, road obstructions, reports of abandoned vehicles, and assists motorist/citizens in various capacities, including children/animals locked in vehicles, disabled vehicles, missing person(s) etc.
- Completes reports for lost property and non-criminal damaged property.
- Provides traffic control for incidents and events that require traffic control.
- Assists with required patrols and tasking related to natural disasters in accordance with agency policies.
- Provides traffic escorts during funeral processions, parades, and other special details as directed.
- Assesses injuries and administersappropriate first aid to injured person, requesting additional medical assistance if necessary in accordance with agency policies.
- Administers CPR until medical personnel arrive on scene and take command of the situation.
- Inspects the vehicle prior to shift to ensure that the vehicle is safe to operate and all emergency equipment is operational.
- Reports any safety hazards or traffic engineering problems occurring at any crossing in their area of responsibility to the appropriate supervisor in accordance with agency policy and procedures and initiates immediate remedial action as warranted to preserve the safety of the pedestrians and motorists in the area.
- Provides assistance with school crossings, as needed.
- Runs vehicle tags/plates to determine if thetag is valid and registration is current.
- Responds to hazmat spills, assessesthe situation, and requests additional or specialized assistance/equipment in accordance with agency policies, state and OSHA regulations.
- Runs/reviewsNCIC/FCIC/DAVID inquiries to standards mandated by state / federal authorities.
- Communicates with business representatives and/or the public regarding parking problems, issues, and violations.
- Positions vehicle in a safemanner/location and removes hazards/objects from the roadway.
- Receives evidence/property and ensures that all required information, including as applicable, the member's signature, date, ID Number and/or time are recorded on the package label pursuant to agency policy.
- Responds to traffic accidents/crashes and upon arrival immediately assess the situation and requests appropriate assistance as necessary (fire, EMT, etc.) in accordance with agency policy and procedure manual.
- Directs traffic in and around congested, secure, accident, or hazardous areas in accordance with agency policies.
Requirements
- High school degree or its equivalent required.
- Flexibility in work schedule based on varying agency requirements
- Proficient in Microsoft office products
- Speak and understand the English language
