Description
The Bailiff Deputy is a Certified Detention Deputy member. In addition to following and performing all duties as outlined in the respective job description, policies, and procedures as Certified Detention Deputies; the Bailiff Deputy is responsible for maintaining order and security of the Clay County Courthouse, its adjacent parking areas, safety of all its occupants (judges, court personnel, citizens and employees), serving and executing enforceable court orders, court proceedings and the care, custody, and control of inmates. An individual serving in this role responds to volatile circumstances while remaining mindful of how their actions reflect on the whole agency of the Sheriff’s Office. This individual must demonstrate professionalism with superior customer service, which requires skills in understanding human behavior, which influences or causes behavioral changes critical for success while providing general information or guidance; understand the knowledge of specialized equipment, techniques, methods, and procedures while involving the use of specialized skills in courtroom security. An individual serving in this role carries out the responsibility of serving as a Detention Deputy under the authority of the Sheriff and the direct instruction of a County or Circuit Judge. Bailiff Deputies are also cross-trained and hold the responsibilities of the Court Security Deputy, Administrative Building Security Deputy, and Bailiff Control Room Operator.
Duties
- Performs all duties as outlined in the respective job description, policies, and procedures as a Certified Detention Deputies.
- Protects all persons and property in the Clay County Courthouse, Clay County Administration Building, and their adjacent parking areas.
- Responds to all emergencies, incidents, or reported crimes which take place in the
courthouse, administration building, and their adjacent parking areas. - Conducts security rounds in the courthouse to insure safety and security is maintained.
- Conduct daily tests of the judicial chambers and courtrooms' panic alarms.
- Conducts daily searches of judicial chambers and courtrooms, completing the daily inspection form for the correlating courtrooms.
- Review daily roster assignments from the unit supervisor.
- Receive and view daily court dockets provided by the judicial assistants for defendants who either are in custody or have local warrants, capias, writs, and custody orders.
- Contact warrants to confirm outstanding warrants or capias. Then arrange to have the individual taken into custody by a
- Law Enforcement Bailiff or Transport Deputy at the completion of their court proceeding.
- Review judges’ calendar/docket noting which proceedings may require additional security.
- Receive and review weekly court dockets provided by the judicial assistants for the approaching judicial proceedings and prepare a weekly detailed summary to the judicial unit supervisors. Complete updates as needed.
Prepare an inmate pull list of the in custody defendants prior to the day of court, noting inmates with keep separate, cell assignments and attorney’s names. - Determines the best way to organize placement of individuals appearing for court.
- Prepares courtroom for daily judicial proceedings.
- Arrange for additional inmates to appear before the judge if necessary.
- Identifies, handles, and solves minor problems or issues within and around the courtroom.
- Receive/escort inmates from the Jail and place them in the coordinating holding cells prior to the start of court.
- Controls movement of parties/inmates appearing for chambers and courtroom proceedings.
- Takes persons into custody as a result of criminal investigation or when directed by active capias, writ, custody order, or judge’s instruction.
- Ensures fingerprints and/or DNA is taken from individuals as required.
- Receive/escort inmates from the holding cells back to the Jail at the completion of court, advising bailiff control of the escort.
Requirements
- High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
- Proficient in Microsoft office products
- Speak and understand the English language
- CJSTC Basic Correctional Officer Certification
