Under general supervision of a Sergeant, or designee, the School Resource Officer - Deputy possesses all the requisite knowledge, skills and physical abilities incumbent upon the position of an entry level deputy sheriff. The School Resource Officer - Deputy works in assigned schools as a law enforcement officer, maintaining effective communication between school officials, students, parents and law enforcement officials, and acts as the liaison between all parties. Incumbent exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine law enforcement duties and in emergency situations. The member also performs public relations duties and tasks specific to the position. Work is reviewed through personal observation, inspections and by discussion and review of periodic reports.
Duties
- Performs all duties as outlined in the job description of a Deputy Sheriff.
- The duties and responsibilities in this position include the pursuit, apprehension and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators;
- Acts as a resource person in the area of law enforcement education;
- Conducts criminal investigations of violations of law on school board property;
- Provides school-based security and maintains the peace on the school board property;
- Receives and dispatches complaints via telephone, walk-in and radios;
- Develops, implements and evaluates security programs in assigned school;
- Provides special truancy investigations and prepares for prosecution;
- Secures, handles and preserves evidence;
- Coordinates investigations of bus and bus stop incidents;
- Performs other duties as mutually agreed upon by the Principal and the agency
- Completes, updates, and submits or forwards all required reports, documents and forms to the appropriate authority/personnel in a timely manner pursuant to applicable state regulations and in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Conducts self-initiated investigations to identify sources of illegal activity. The member will process raw intelligence data, document said data as appropriate and disseminate to the proper investigative entities.
- Documents and carefully maintains the security and control of all collected evidence, ensuring the integrity of the evidence and limited accessibility so the evidence may be presented and accepted by a court of law pursuant to state and federal statutes consistent with agency policies and procedures.
- Assists other agencies/divisions in conducting criminal investigations by sharing information, expertise and/or other investigative resources as appropriate while keeping their supervisor apprised of the nature and specifics of the request for assistance.
- Maintains communication by properly operating a radio or other approved communications device for routine communication with members of their agency or with outside agencies when involved in multi-jurisdictional cases, following all applicable procedures and policies regarding transmissions.
- Utilizes all available law enforcement and community resources to accurately identify and monitor prior offenders, gang members, or extremist groups' activities/presence in the community with the goal of preventing potential criminal activities and without violating the constitutional rights of the individual(s) consistent with agency policies.
- Analyzes criminal activities in the community in order to identify specific crime patterns such as the type of crime, time and place of occurrence, and offender identity, with the goal of developing effective means and information/evidence to prevent or solve criminal activity consistent with agency policies.

Requirements
- High school degree or its equivalent required
- Meet requirements and standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13.
- Minimum 2 years of law enforcement experience as a sworn officer
- 2 years in a school atmosphere as a School Resource Officer (Preferred)
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida DL
- Knowledge and experience in School Campus Threat Assessments (Preferred)
- Ability to speak, write and comprehend the English language
Certification, Licenses and Registrations Requirements:
- Florida Basic law enforcement certification required (420 hours).
- School Resource Officer Certification (Preferred)
- Crisis Intervention Certification (Preferred)
